Copied and pasted from the General Chat forum to start a thread on its own. Edits made.

So I was thinking we could do something like an adapted bar project http://www.rivanwarriors.com/forum/viewtop...ght=bar+project . If Xena agreed to participate, we could make two teams, and Lyr, Zamo, Xena and SD would split themselves up between the two and then select two or three guildies per team from the "older" Rivans. Not every guildie would necessarily be involved, but we'd have longer time and newer guildies working together in each team. Then you set a deadline (a week or two), and assign point values to certain items to be made, and off ya go. We could either make things for Addy, or as raffle prizes. As with the bar project, each team would get a portion of what is produced with the winning team getting a little more than the other team. It was super fun when we did the bar project, remember? FYI - I wasn't a Rivan yet, and got to know most Rivans that way, including Hex, whom I didn't like at first cause he was that scary looking dude I always ran into at Raven when he repeatedly deposited way too many bars for the opposing team
Sound like fun?

lil

Edit: After discussion in guild here is a list of "to do" items.

1) decide on items,
[list]
2)decide on whether to go by points (in that case, assign points) or time race,
[list]
3) select teams,
4) set a start time,
5)decide on submission process,
[list]
6) do it,
7) score it,
award prizes

Two options were suggested for 2). Either, (Option A) we agree on a range of items and each gets a point value assigned. Then each team can decide which of the items (and how many) they want to make. The team with the higher points at the end wins the better prize.
Or, (Option cool.gif we set a specific amount of specific items that each team has to make, and the first team to make them (race!) wins the better prize.

I had a very helpful idea for what we could make (im also in btw)
I was thinkin it would be cool to have to mix Air Essence then after the end of the race we could use those AEs to train QuennJenny's magic lvl sence we have always been wanting to do it be never really want to get the AEs

Thanks Smurf and Horvic, and AEs are a great idea as one of the possible items to be mixed. Keep your suggestions coming and sign up if you're interested in participating. Remember, all participants will get a kick-back smile.gif

count me in, I can afk harv for whichever team I end up on, and I think AEs are an awesome idea also. We'll need to make sure the teams are divided so that there are diamond harvesters on each team.

Sounds great, but tbh I can't promise yet if you can count on me.
It all depends on available time, mood, and misc factors.

Ok, with Hex and Ferny's help the teams were decided, as well as items and item values. We are going with option A (highest point values earned wins). Both teams will get "participation" prizes/kick-backs from what is produced, but the winning team will get a little more.

New date!
The contest will start next Thursday, July 10, and will go one full week, till Wednesday evening (July 16), 11:59 pm EST.

Team leaders will be Ryddler and Hex. Each team is allowed to select TWO non-Rivans to participate in their team. You can ask anyone you want. Items and point value will be released late on Wednesday night. There are items for alch, craft, pots, and manu. Right now, the teams are balanced by emu and "time online." Each team also has two people with inorg nex 5 or 6.

Submission Updated
Completed items should be submitted to Adarah. You must DONATE the items to Addy (if you don't donate, they cannot be counted).

There will be a spreadsheet available to all participants to track progress etc.

Until Thursday, please coordinate with each other, select your two non-guildie team mates (and tell me who they are).

Good luck to all!

During a discussion with my team to try to figure out our scheduling, it was uncovered that several people have plans for the three day weekend. I'd like to request that we timeshift the contest one week to better accomodate everyone's schedules if possible?
Hex
Same happened with my team. One week would work for us too. Might also provide a bit more decision time for non-Rivans we invite?
shallara
are long inactive rivans welcome? smile.gif
Enius
Not sure how much help a long inactive Rivan would be, but feel free to join in. smile.gif

well.. what if a rivan took a break from inactivity to join in the festivities?
Enius
That would be nice, but we would probley need another person to join in to keep the teams even. smile.gif

Ok, how about we start EDITED: Thursday, July 10, and go till Wednesday night 11:59 pm EST. And I'll make the items and rules etc available late Wednesday night (the 9th).

And Shally, looks like prolly we can add you on Ryd's team smile.gif if everyone is ok with Hex's team adding SleepyDragon as a "guildie". Each team still has their two non-guildies then.

The spreadsheet linked below is accessible only to those participating in the mix-a-thon. Everyone is added as "viewer" except lil (organizer) and Ferny (record keeper).

The spreadsheet has 4 tabs.

[list]Tab 1 - Rules: lists the 7 rules of the contest
Tab 2 - Teams: lists the participants with team, emu, and inorg nex
Tab 3 - Items & Points: lists the items you can choose from and how many points each is worth; also includes a running total for each team as Ferny updates the spreadsheet
Tab 4 - Submissions: For Ferny's use *if* she wants to use it for detailed record keeping, but that's up to her as we have Addy's logs if necessary[list]
The items and points will be listed here in this message too for easy reference, starting at 9:30 pm EST today.

Remember to DONATE to Addy. Items submitted before or after the official start/end time will not be counted.

This just in!

There have been reported random lima beans thrown when both team members accidentally bump into each other!

Unfortunately, today Hex received rl news that will keep him away from the game for most of his time. However, he remains a member of Team Hex and we send good thoughts to him.

Also, Ferny decided she would prefer not to be actively involved with the contest anymore and chose to leave Team Hex. We hope she will change her mind and come back tomorrow. I do not know whether she will continue to do the daily overall updates or not, she didn't say.

Team Hex will continue and we will do our best to overcome the loss of active participation from these two strong team members and of course we understand Hex's situation and must respect Ferny's decision.

Unfortunately due to rl stuff happening last week, although I have been logged on I have been very afkish and will continue to be as I am packing up to move house. I will try and do stuff when I can but as I warned at the begining of the event unfortunately rl stuff has to take priority.
Enius
After talking with team members from both teams we came up with a possible better way to destribte the mixed items from this contest.

What would everyone think about splitting the prizes 50/50 between the teams after Addy takes her cut? So it would really be a 25/25 split instead of a 30/20 split in favor of the winning team.
PhilDaBurn
If Horvic and Smurf want to even things out between themselves, that's up to them. I signed onto a contest with clear rules.
lilcnoot
Let me start by saying that sadly, this contest seems to bring out a lot of tensions that have run as under-currents through the guild for a while. And sadly, I believe the non-guildies are seeing Riva at its worst, and instead of pointing fingers at who is to blame maybe we should all just feel embarrassed for having exposed them to all this negativity.

This is a long post, but I spent time thinking it through and editing it, so it is not an emotional rant.

1. Let’s face it, without this contest, we wouldn’t just donate all this time, energy and stuff to make things for Addy. There may be the occasional, laudable exception, but as a whole we’re not in the habit of freely donating thousands of things to Addy. So, we need to motivate people into it, and the idea of a contest derives from that. A contest only works if one team will win, and the other will not. You can’t have a contest where everyone earns first place in the end. And to throw in some extra motivation, you offer a reward, in this case, a kick-back of items produced. All of the guildies knew this when you signed up for the contest, and it should have been explained to the non-guildies. I know I explained it to Phil and Leah. I am 100% convinced that if everyone had been promised an equal 25% per team from the beginning, neither team would have worked as hard as they have. If this hadn’t been a contest (with a reward, yes), most of us wouldn’t have signed up for it. Be that honest with yourself.

2. Last year, I was on the team that ended up losing, and there were times when I felt frustrated, and that the teams were unequal, but I continued busting my butt nonetheless and did it gladly. I don’t think I could have worked any harder, and in fact I know I worked even harder than this year. In the end my team lost, but I didn’t really care, because I was proud of all that we had produced despite various obstacles. Then I got a bunch of stuff from Shally as my reward, and I was extremely happy about whatever it was I received. I don’t know what percentage it was of what. Hex mentioned to me that he thought last year it was 50:30:20, and that sounded good to me, so that’s what I put in place for this year. I really hope that in the end, all of you will feel good about your participation in this contest, no matter whether you “win” or “lose” and no matter how much “stuff” you get.

3. If I was in this for material things, the smartest thing would be to donate nothing to my team, mix/harv for a few hours a day, and in the end take whatever I’m given. I’m not in this for material things. I was frustrated Thursday night, so I added some numbers and realized that during that first day, I contributed items worth over 180k gc from my personal stock already on that first day. There’s no way I’m getting even close to that “back” and I don’t care one bit. I don’t even care about winning or losing, most of the time I don’t even think about the other team. Mostly I want to just work hard and see how much my team can produce today, more a “be all that you can be” thing than “I want to win and get stuff” for sure.

4. I don’t know about Team Ryddler, but let me tell you about my team mates on Team Hex. Sleepy has been tossing pieces of broken molds over her shoulder left and right as she has mixed more than 8k vials for us. Horvic is the proverbial harvesting Energizer-bunny when he’s on, swinging that pick relentlessly. Leah has been mixing up a storm, and Marc has used up ever single toad and health ess in his storage doing the same. Hex puts his orchan strength to everything he does and Phil – Phil is unstoppable. He has donated so incredibly many ings, harvs all day only to mule and mix at night. Every time I suggest that maybe he would like to take a break he replies that instead maybe he could just get started early on the next project. Ferny, while she was with us, was steady support, always there, always plugging away. I know we have arguments in my team, but I’m actually quite proud of us as a whole, and what we’ve accomplished.

5. On the question of teams, if you feel your team is disadvantaged then I am sorry that is causing you stress. But if you imply that I have purposefully made one team stronger than the other, then you are way out of line. I spent an incredible amount of time looking up people via gossip, and yes, I balanced by emu and nexus, but I did that *in addition* to balancing by time online and skills to the best of my knowledge and perception. I didn’t know Lyr would be held up by RL until right before the beginning of the contest. I see her as a very strong member of her team, high skills, many resources, and usually online a lot. Marc said in his forum post he doesn’t even know if he can be really part of the contest because he doesn’t know how much he’ll be on. How am I supposed to know that he’ll be on as much as he is? That’s just two examples. But I cannot know everything about everyone, and I made the teams as equal as I possibly could in emu, nexus, skill, and online time as I perceived it.
What many of you might not know is that I asked Ferny and Hex to look over the teams before they were ever published. Ferny seemed not 100% comfortable with them, but didn’t make any suggestions on how to change them. Hex did change them by switching out two players. What many of you also might not know is that I wasn’t on either team at that point. As organizer I felt I should stay out of it, plus, I wasn’t sure where to put myself. Smurf, Horvic and Hex together convinced me that I had to participate. Smurf in fact told me if I wasn’t going to participate, he wouldn’t either. It was Hex who put me on what was “Team Ferny” at the time. Later I asked Ryddler as team captain about the teams, and he wasn’t concerned about them even though I specifically told him that one person on his team was concerned that the teams might be uneven. When Team Ryddler asked to add another person, I agreed, and if you remember, I said something along the lines of if my perception of the teams’ balance is different from everybody else’s, then my perception should not stand in the way. Don’t accuse me of *making* the teams unbalanced. Oh, and please remember that the only people who had anything to do with choosing Team Ryddler’s non-guildies are members of Team Ryddler. So don’t tell me it’s not fair that Ryddler’s non-guildies are not as strong as Hex’s non-guildies. I really, really had zero control over that part and it’s not a very nice thing to say about people that you chose as your team mates!

6. Finally, Enius’ suggestion. Maybe it wasn’t intended as such, Horvic said it wasn’t, but it felt to me like an avalanche that had already rolled over me before I even knew it was there. People were counting votes and using expressions like “majority” in reference to 5 or 6 people (there are 18 active participants!). I was told I was overruled before I had ever even said how I felt about that suggestion. I understand enthusiasm, but this felt like more than enthusiasm. In fact, it felt as if anyone who could possibly voice a concern or opposition would simply be stomped into the ground (avalanche again). That is why I tried to stop people from counting votes, and why I strongly supported Rayna’s suggestion to post this to the forum, and why I said that we should all take the night to think about it.
So now I’m ready to say where I stand on this issue. Personally, I don’t care if I get 20%, 25%, or 30%. But, two things. First, I think that if we even out the playing field now, motivation will fizzle out (see comment 1). Of course, after all this it might be all gone already anyway. If the team leaders later, after the end of the contest, decide on some other percentage distribution, then I won’t object, whatever it is, because I trust Ryddler and Hex’s judgement. And second, if someone who has worked as hard as Phil points us to the rules then I want that to weigh in very strongly too. I’m sure Phil would gladly accept his share of 30% if he ends up on the winning team, but from my impression of him over the last few days, I believe he would just as gladly (and without any complaining at all) accept his share of 20% if he ends up on the losing team. That is not the same as accepting 25%, by the way. If you cannot see the difference, please say so and I will try to explain it in a separate post. So, I like the spirit of Enius’ suggestion, but I don’t think we should vote on it. Instead, we should see it as a suggestion to the team leaders and let them decide after the contest is over. And if you don't like whatever they decide, you are always welcome to distribute some of your share to others that you feel deserve more.
leahatwood
listen, i know we all have high tempers right now. but when these things happen, it would be a good idea to take some time and breathe. which was my suggestion; to wait until the next morning to post. sleep on it, consider it. the same with the above post about ferny leaving. things should be slept on before posting about, because when tempers are as short as they were tonight, your mind doesn't work the same way. it's like approaching a school project saying "god this is so LAME why do i have to do this i hate my teacher" ect ect.
by taking the vote, we were in NO way trying to make a change based on the opinions of the people online at the moment. all we were trying to see is if there were a considerable amount of people (especially on Hex's team's side) that wanted to change the winnings to 50/50. i am sorry that you felt that you have to defend yourself, and if it were up to me i'd take everything said tonight back and reword it. but we can't.
perhaps now we can approach this subject knowing that the topic was not brought up to make a spur of the moment decision.
anyway, my two cents thus far.

Excellent effort everyone! That is the closest point spread I have seen in any contest in my 3 years in the guild, only 3%. I also think it is awesome how each team chose to go about making different items, instead of focusing in on one item, and still coming out so close.

Thank you a ton lilcnoot for putting this together. :!:

Hopefully next time a client update will not be looming and I will be able to participate too.

any idea on time for the thing tomorrow?
Enius
Its not tomorrow. You get your prizes when ever you can trade with ryddler. smile.gif
lilcnoot
Yes, as far as I know, due to logistical reasons Ryddler and Hex decided to forego a big ceremony. The logistical reasons were mostly, a) finding a time that would work for 18 people, and cool.gif the rather long time it would take to trade that many people that many different things.

Based on Smurf's message it sounds like Team Afk will not hold its own ceremony, and to the best of my knowledge Team Hex won't either, so please track down your team leader to receive your share.
